Description
We buy cars we like and sell them to people we like. It’s our strapline and has been since we began tinkering and fettling classic cars as a business back in 2008.
Why did we acquire this car? Great story and fabulous car.
In 1961 this stunning Jaguar was first registered 169DFJ to John Pitts of John Pitts and Son. An Exeter based paper merchant. The car then meandered through life with varying fortunes leading to total disrepair and storage on a farm with circa 35000 miles on the clock. In the early 2000’s the car was nut and bolt restored and enjoyed through to 44000 miles. This is where the story gets emotional and compelling. H+H consigned the car for auction in 2017. I remember seeing the car at that auction and it was purchased for £35k by the first owner’s son John Pitts Jnr who tinkered and enjoyed the car for 7 years. Squaring the circle of time the 45000 mile car is now with us bringing it back into my life too. I remembered it being an outstanding car and it is just that. Beautiful and really outstanding.
Concentrating on the facts, we have a JDHT certificate confirming a matching numbers car and a recorded mileage of just 45000 which all my instinct tells me is correct. The restoration is fully documented and done to the highest standard evidenced by hundreds of photos and a thick pile of bills for parts and work to the car. The opalescent blue paintwork is virtually perfect and the interior red leather, original and beautifully presented. The wood is refurbished and perfect. Rear wheel spats fitted to the car are the ‘Coombs’ type in aluminium but the full spats are also painted and with the car. Chrome work was refurbished rather than replaced. The work is amazing and the quality of finish is second to none.
The acid test of a mark II for me is how the doors shut. Just a gentle push and they sit perfectly in the door frame. I can’t remember seeing better. The engine is so sweet and holds perfect oil pressure sitting in an immaculate engine bay. The chrome wire wheels and tyres are perfect . On the road the car has excellent road manners. Uprated brakes and suspension give an assured feel and compliment the beautiful engine which rapidly and effortlessly takes you through the gears to a cruising 70mph with ease. Inside the cabin there is no wind noise and the leather and wood interior are so indulgent and luxurious. If you need music above and beyond the engine symphony then the Becker radio mated to electric aerial further suggests absolute quality. The history file is huge and all the original books and Heritage Certificate come with this exceptional car.
This car is sold with a 12 month or 3000mile engine warranty to ensure the new owner has pleasure form this super Jaguar in the way the previous owners have. If you want a Jaguar Mark II I can say with a good degree of confidence you will not find a better one.
